The separation of Mindoro Island into two provinces in 1950 had created a separate schools division for Occidental Mindoro. From then on, succession of Schools Division Superintendents and Assistant Schools Division Superintendents took place.

Classified as medium-sized, the Division of Occidental Mindoro is headed by Schools Division Superintendent and one Assistant Schools Division Superintendent. There are 15 districts spread in 11 municipalities led by 10 Public Schools District Supervisors (PSDS). For administrative and instructional supervision purposes, some PSDSs handle two districts while coordinating principals are designated to supervise Looc and Lubang Districts.

Beginning 2015, the rationalized structure of the Department of Education took effect. This gave birth to three functional divisions such as the Office of the Schools Division Superintendent (OSDS), Curriculum Implementation Division (CID) and the School Governance and Operations Division (SGOD). Due to the less number of items in the Schools Division Office – Proper and the growing demand of work, the human resource is being complemented by some items whose stations are non-school specific. These personnel are spread across all three functional divisions where workforce augmentation is needed. Likewise, additional personnel are being outsourced through job order employment.
